School volunteer has molest conviction

San Diego schools officials will review their policies for background checks on volunteers after they learned a 63-year-old sex offender had worked with music students for months.

Vincent Greco, a volunteer music teacher at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, was arrested Sunday on suspicion of failing to register as a sex offender, police said.

Sex-crimes detectives were notified last week about possible inappropriate conduct between Greco and a student at the SCPA, said San Diego police Lt. Rick O'Hanlon. Police would not say who tipped them.

I saw your story and am trying to advocate for change.Schools all across the nation are way way too lax when it comes to checking the background of volunteer coaches.

IMO the media is the only way to get attention to this problem. Just take a little time to look at the website below and you will see what I am talking about.

The website above contains newspaper articles as well as a criminal trial transcript with redacted names of minors. This situation was very similar to the SD Volunteer except, once the allegations of innapropriate conduct were made in 2002, people without any "gonads" hid and ran.

In case, the school volunteer had a documented history of molestion. He was charged and prosecuted 1989 in Texas. Moved to Liberal Kansas 1992 to which our Kansas school district embraced him and gave him access to children through the school athletic programs for 10 years. Allegations were brought by several youth in Liberal, Kansas 2002, to which there was a criminal trial.

Throughout the criminal trial the school district continued to support this man who wa a weight trainer for the school district. Officials of the school district continued to give support even in light of his prior bad acts which were admitted as evidence in his 2004 criminal trial.

The schools wrestling coach testifed in defense of the volunteer coach and stated the following under oath:

This line of questioning is deplorable and IMO it allowed this known pedophile to beat the system two times and this school mindset also explains why things like this continue to happen all across the country >b<

Q Did you encourage kids to get involved in Johnny's program?
A I never talked to a kid one way or the other about it.
Q Okay. But you were pleased that they were participating?
A I felt there was some benefit, yes, sir.
Q Okay. Would you have felt the same way if you had known at the time that Johnny Aubrey had admitted to the Chief of Police in Borger, Texas, that he had put on rubber gloves and taken some lotion and masturbated a young man?
MR. SWANSON: Object as speculation.\
THE COURT: Overruled.
A (By Mr. Thomas Scott) My basic philosophy is everybody deserves a second chance. And with what I observed, I would have no problem with what Mr. Aubrey was doing.
Q (By Mr. Shellenberger) Okay. Even if coupled with the fact that he was taking kids alone to his house for baths?
A There again, I would have no problem with it.
Q Okay. Thank you, sir. >b<
